Dr Who - Cleric Wars APP game

So it's been a busy year what with the heavy freelance workload at Designworks and teaching a new set of students at UCA, commuting from my new location in Windsor. I've decided to put these images up before the year is out to show some of my favourite work I've been involved in. These feature heavily in a recently released App game for 'Character Options'. The game is called 'Cleric Wars' which is an augmented reality smart phone game. I was commissioned to create all cut visuals to compliment the voice over of this Dr Who extended universe game.. These are at a fairly low resolution for obvious reasons and are all copyright of Character Options.. Hope you enjoy.

quick painting 05

This is tonights speed painting, I'm warming up to doing some real world, real paint, real canvas, real mess work over the christmas break, due to having a bare walled new flat. Going to try and inject the same immediacy and energy with limited colour palettes.

selected life drawings

Here are some of my recent life drawings. Been attending the superb life drawing classes with Patrick Palmer at the Windsor firestation. I'm leaving out the uber scrappy speculative sketches, these are the slightly longer studies.

20 minute digital painting

Tonights effort. Managing to squeeze in some quick paintings every night at the moment despite a heavy work load at Designworks.. This was another 20 minutes well spent and enjoyed..

new characters

OK, set out with the sole aim of making 3 characters which were graphic and fresh in a few hours. Just realised they look like a band of trick or treaters from some sci fi alternate reality, didn't want to paint them to death, but will definitely revisit one of them and take to a more finished state.. Any preferences?

statue warrior

Been neglecting character a bit lately so thought I'd get my eye in and finish this chap off. About 4 hours work all together, been very influenced by the works of Izzy Medrano and Andy Park, two concept artists that make digital painting looking sickeningly easy. More character on the to finish list coming very soon.

Illustrated panel 2

Been playing with layering sketches and scanned elements for a while now, and have started converting experiments into finished artworks. I like the fact that in Photoshop I can endlessly layer, flatten and draw into. This style is one that will easily make it into real media, at the moment I need more space to get messy in so Photoshop is my 'clean' ideas laboratory where I can experiment quickly and freely. This needs a few more passes to disguise some of its 'Photoshopiness'..

weekend sketch

Ok just a little pen doodle that escalated over the weekend, exemplary of what's going on in the sketchbook these days. Must start colouring these babies..

Full colour exploration..

Ok, this was bound to happen sooner or later, plenty of inspiration that needed to be channeled into some finished artwork. Think the details that I have been painting would be going on in the villages to the bottom right. Can't help myself in zooming out and developing the bigger picture. Oh just bought Camtasia so when I've got my head round it I'm planning to record and post all future paintings with voice over..

interior development

I'm playing with the idea of old derelict farm buildings built on top of with branches and ropes and anything else earthy. Liking the moods I'm getting now, the interiors are proving incredibly addictive to draw. I can feel some more grand establishing shots coming on..

witch interior sketch two

Further study into this increasingly rickety interior, want these structures to look like they've been built upon many, many times, this allows light to permeate rather satisfyingly through, a concept artists dream..

witch interior sketch

Sticking with the same theme thought I'd use it as an opportunity to make an interior sketch, loads of scope for implying materials and practicing lighting and mood. 3 Hours in Photoshop later, me done for the night..

Witch territory

A quick black and white in Photoshop, Got the composition blocked out, now looking forward to digging into the colour stage, still room to tweak some of the shapes at this stage..

illustrated panel experiment

Some wise, creative people inspired me over the weekend to begin posting again so I'm now beginning the process of posting as I make, as a record of my progress and to track the style as it develops. This is a little panel that began life as a sketchbook doodle..

Animation collaboration concepts

These are two concepts of 20, just bringing together some ideas for a collaborative animation with Dan Innes happening later this year. Just testing out a few aesthetics at this stage and dipping my toe into animation preproduction..

Geek 2012 Demonstration- Alien Colony

Here is the finished image created at Geek 2012, a retro gaming festival in Margate, Kent. This images was partly created in front of the Geek audience as a demonstration of digital painting. I achieved roughly 40% of the image with the Demonstration. Over all this image took about 6 hours and came under the title - Alien Colony. The content for my '365 sketchbook' is now complete and will be on sale here in a month or so when it's been compiled and printed. Please check back then for availability.
