finishing some designs

Having more time at the moment to push my own style of illustration, just getting back into the flow with a few characters from the sketch book. Managing to find much more creative energy now I've decided to finish work rather than pursuing endless sketchbook pages. Happy with this as a stylistic starting point..Hope you agree:-)

sketchbook adaptations

Been exploring different directions recently. Here are a few examples. I'm a personal fan of the middle image, drawn in biro and coloured in Photoshop. Trying to find a language to apply to screen printing, little way to go but definitely enjoying looking.

Quick creature sketch

Just a little hour or two doodle. could do with some refinement but maybe he can be parked like this. Only time will tell..

Hand sculpting again- Work in progress

Recently taking a few spare days to go back to my roots of hand sculpting. This is very much a test piece, just to get my eye back in before I make some work to mould and cast up. This is sculpted in NSP Chavant mediun and stands about 3" tall. After zbrush sculpting for so long now I've gotten a little rusty but always enjoy the process of using clay immensely. Got about another day left on this guy to really refine and add some subtleties.

still a student of drawing..

I started today with a little warm up sketch that got increasingly out of control and turned into this. Ive been doing lots more studying of late, as in really drilling down into some of the gaps in my knowledge. Been looking hard at some of the drawings of my concept art heroes like Izzy medrano, wesley burt and Anthony Jones to name but a few. These guys are very generous with tutorials and also just simple advice on how to really improve your fundamentals. Although I've always thought I was a student of the fundamentals I think I've allowed too many gaps to remain and this has stopped me from really exploring the work I want to make. I've recently begun to draw in a more robust studious way between freelance projects so when that next piece of work requires it I have the skills to do the job with confidence. This is about 3 hours work and the next one I fully intend to record for the blog. I think this could be useful for people just getting going as digital painters. Any comments most welcome.

Last WIP shot before completion

So, finally getting to grips with the feel of this guy. Been teaching myself all the curve functions and new tools in zbrush along the way. This is exactly the feel I was going for, the ageing punk, washed up but still holding on to the attitude and swagger.. Few tweaks to the polypainting and he's done. Boom..

Zbrush - Todays progress

Spent a few more hours today drilling into this guys anatomical structure and details. Starting to look as distasteful as I wanted him too. Think he's taking on the right age range I was going for too. Earlier stage was looking a bit old and weak. Just deciding on the hair but thinking he's working either way, another pass/ session and he's folio ready..

dirty marker studies

Here's a few quick sketches from the sketchbook, no particular project in mind, just mixing the media up a bit and running my black markers into the ground..

Illustration 2015

This is one of a set of drawings I've been developing recently. I'm exploring the pipeline from sketchbook to finished illustration and attempting to refine my illustrative style in the process. As usual there's some weird stuff coming out in the book but I'm generally happy with how these are going. I'd so love to animate something in this style but having to force myself away from that palette in photoshop and plough on with the ideas first. The timeline can wait.. for a few weeks anyway.

Feb 2015 exhibition

Well, this has taken me a while to get together but wanted to post my paintings in full from a recent group exhibition I had with friends Phil Gomm and Phil Cooper in Whitstable. I've been beavering away at these studies over the winter since I acquired a truck in which to work while waiting to move house. A rare opportunity to be able to experiment and get messy for a while. I'm now packing up the truck studio ready to put down roots in Whitstable. Lucky for me my new space/ workshop is equally as inviting as this one, if a little warmer. Big thanks to Mr Louca, Mr Buckley and Mr Jones for providing great faces to paint, all good men..

quickie...

There's no getting away from it, the blog has become a little neglected of late, what with putting exhibitions together and lots of lovely freelance work. This space is well overdue a spring clean, in the mean time here's a little quickie, a burst of excitement and fun. If you know me you'll also know it's a work in progress..
