A few recent visits to the art table

Been spending a few hours this weekend beginning to create some new work. I've been working in black ink, white water soluble coloured pencil and acrylics. Had a mild obsession with drawing skulls for my instagram page for a while so I'm slowly shifting away from that and in the process loving what the black and coloured papers are allowing me to achieve. I feel like I'm getting a freshness of style that might really develop the more character based I go. Watch this space, oh and this one too.

boy soldier vinyl toy collectable

Been a while since I've posted, really as a result of preparing for a group show at the end of the month. This figure above is a recent figure I've been working on commercially. I've been working closely with the urban artist Schoony, based at Elstree studios. Over the last few months this talented artist I now know well, has been uploading ideas to my sculpting brain and we've brought a few prototypes to life that are taking his well known artworks into the world of vinyl collectables. The first of which being an adaptation of his iconic 'Boy Soldier'.

This model is now in production and will be limited to 1000 units.  He stands 6" tall and has been produced in an incredible glow in the dark material. Anyone who's a toy collector or a lover of his work should see his facebook page or follow his work on instagram for news of the release.. Has been a pleasure to work with this dynamic, motivated artist. I'm currently working on an adaptation of his latest sculpture 'Bruiser'.

apocalypse progress

Ploughing ahead with my apocalypse sculpt in ZBrush. Studying as I go, and already filling in some blanks in my anatomy knowledge. Haven't worked out how I'm going to pose him up yet, as in the gesture not the technique. He's unfolding nicely though so really looking forward to the final statuesque feel when it starts to happen.

Apocalypse sculpt - first stage

Recently I've been pushing myself in lots of ways with my artwork and having a quiet period work wise has made me pay closer attention to some of the blanks in my portfolio. I guess the question I asked myself is 'what is missing'? Not one really for fan art, I rarely visit these kinds of characters but when work throws them my way I'm over the moon and secretly wish I could have chosen a better character. I decided to brief myself on this one, and seeing as the adaptation of Apocalypse in the new x-men movie is utterly awful I decided to see what I could come up with. This is the first pass, about a days work but plenty more to do. This is going to be a dynamically posed statue and I think the key direction is "fuckin Bad Ass" More progress to come as I go. Enjoying this one so much..

Head Maquette.

This is an idea that I've been toying with making for a while. With the lowering of costs for 3d printing making sculptural work digitally for output is now totally affordable. I'm itching to get some of these pieces printed out and then I can go to town with the decoration(painting). I often have this vision of a black and white world where uber realism appears sporadically and in patches, This idea can be pushed so so far and I'm exploring this in my sketchbooks with a view to getting these into 3D. This is a first step, and during the process I get to explore skull structure and facial details, all good.

And a little fun and experimentation that's going down a rather Clive Barker kind of a direction. Can't say I disapprove myself.

'Three Wishes' Limited edition screen print.

This is an exciting moment for me, this is the first of a series of limited edition screen prints I'm making this summer alongside my painting and sculpting. Just taken delivery of this little bundle of awesomeness. I found myself with tonnes of sketchbooks crammed with ideas going unseen and decided to convert some of my faves into screen prints. The process was surprisingly complicated  thanks to me creating an image with lots of overlapping complexity...like I do.  Having got the first one under my belt with the help of the amazing printblock studio in Whitstable, I'm busy drawing up the next, with sketches to come soon. Copies of this print are limited to 25 and can be purchased here, and can be seen in a group show in Whitstable in late August at the Horsebridge art centre..

zbrush doodle..

A private project, that appears to be taking on the look of Vincent Price mixed with salvador Dali.. Hmmm which way to go?

Digital character study

Found this fantastic fella in a copy of National geographic and decided to use him as a tool to study materials. Always drawn to this kind of imagery and taking it out of context allows me to study the pose and feel, so not getting bogged down with context. Drawing material naturally needs a lot of understanding when doing it from your head, I'm currently making myself study, rather than relying on old preconceptions.

back painting

Been clearing out the studio, squeezing out fresh oil paint and trying a few new methods of creating paintings. I ripped a tonne of hard board off my landing wall this week and after contemplating chucking it all in a skip I thought better of it and cut it into beautiful painting surfaces. Out comes the palate knife and inspiration flows once again. Nothing quite like it when you've got everything in place to create. Got an exhibition of new work in August in Whitstable, much more progress to come in the coming months.

Quick morning sketch before work starts, about half an hour, definitely subject matter I need to look into more.

creature design

Can always find time to doodle a creature such as this.

creature study progress page

A step by step process image of this little creature paint. Quite like working this way, get it to a certain stage then copy, then paint some more, then copy and so on.

few new sculpts

Have recently been working on some of my own zbrush work, these are a few of them, the middle piece is Dave Gahan, which is is being produced for a range of likeness busts I've been thinking about for ages.  Likeness is getting there but as ever, conflicting reference is a challenge. The others are one hour sketches made while waiting for client approval on commercial work. I think I've refound the love for Zbrush, really because I've gone back to studying anatomy properly and digital allows me to try out these lessons straight away.

just a sketch

Professional work is eating up all of my time of late but still managing to spend the odd few hours in the sketchbook in the last few weeks. No glamour here, just root and branch drawing fun/ practice.
